Connor MacLeod

Connor MacLeod

"Let's go to PETCO" my daughter said, "They have puppies up for adoption."  I was going through a difficult time in my life and my wife and daughter thought a dog would really help me.

"I want that one!" I told my wife and daughter as dozens of rescue puppies barked and jumped to be noticed and adopted.  Why?  Because he was just laying over in the corner by himself without a care in the world.  I liked his quiet disposition and independent nature.  He was kind of like me.  So we brought him home that day and he became our family's first dog.

I initially wanted to name him "Dave" but my wife and daughter vetoed that name.  So I named him "Connor MacLeod" after the protagonist in the 1986 movie "Highlander" (one of my favorites).

He was around 7 pounds when we brought him to the veterinarian for his first examination and round of shots.  But he grew quickly and eventually peaked out at 35 pounds by his first birthday in September 2017.

Connor worked his way into all of our hearts.  We spoiled him with attention and plenty of treats, toys, and table scraps.  We brought him everywhere with us.  Every time we'd come home he heartily greeted us.  He became the glue that held us together and our lives joyfully revolved around him.  We also grew to love walking him two to three times a day.  He was very popular with the neighbors as he loved everyone.

Recently while returning home from one of these walks, Connor and I were crossing the street when a careless driver almost hit me by a few feet but tragically hit Connor.  He died before we got him to the veterinarian.  My family was devastated!

You see, we didn't save a rescue dog by adopting him; he saved us!  He unconditionally loved us and filled our hearts with so much joy.  He'll be missed, but we hope to see him again in heaven.
